Severe bleeding and pressure bandage
Press firmly on the wound at once, call 112, then apply a pressure bandage from the first aid kit.
-
Put on the disposable gloves from the kit.
-
Have the person sit or lie down and press firmly on the wound.
Use a dressing or a clean cloth. The person can also press themselves.
-
Call 112 or have someone call.
-
Place the dressing pad on the wound and wrap it twice.
-
Put a second, unopened pack exactly on the wound as a pressure pad.
-
Wrap firmly over it and tuck in or tie the end.
Firm, but fingers or toes must stay warm and pink.
-
Let the person lie down, cover them and stay until the ambulance arrives.
Caution
- If blood soaks through, apply a second bandage on top. Do not remove the first one.
- Do not pull out objects stuck in the wound, pad around them.
For first aiders and fire wardens
- If an arm or leg keeps bleeding life-threateningly despite the bandage, increase the pressure. Use a tourniquet only if you are trained, 5 to 7 cm above the wound, not over a joint, and do not loosen it.
- Record every first aid case in the first aid log and have used material refilled.
