Foam fire extinguisher
Raise the alarm first. Then pull the pin, get close, spray short bursts at the base of the fire.
-
Shout "Fire!" and call 112 or press the fire alarm button.
-
Pull the safety pin. If the extinguisher has a striker knob, hit it hard.
-
With the wind at your back, move to about 3 metres from the fire.
-
Aim at the base of the fire, not at the flames, and spray in short bursts.
Fight spreading fires from front to back, dripping fires from top to bottom.
-
If it does not get smaller or smoke comes towards you, get out and close the door.
Caution
- Never spray onto burning fat or oil. Use the fat fire extinguisher for that.
- Keep the minimum distance shown on the label when near electrical equipment.
- Do not hang used extinguishers back up, report them.
For first aiders and fire wardens
- Use several extinguishers at the same time if possible, not one after another.
- After extinguishing watch for re-ignition and brief the fire brigade.
